Culturally Responsive Services

This page highlights services that understand culture, identity & community wellbeing. While many services across this website welcome all carers, the options below are specifically guided by First Nations Knowledge or Multicultural Experience to provide culturally safe support.

PLEASE NOTE: While most services listed throughout this website welcome and support First Nation carers, the services below are led by First Nations people with deep cultural understanding and practices. These services have culturally competent staff, incorporate cultural practices, and are tailored to meet the unique needs of First Nations or multicultural carers.

Kalwun Development Corporation

This is the primary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisation on the Gold Coast, offering comprehensive support for carers including senior services that help older people and their carers with assistance at home and getting out into the community at Kalwun.

My Aged Care (for carers of older people)

For Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years or older, there is a range of Australian Government-subsidised aged care services available.

ProgramThe National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aged Care Program (NATSIFAC) funds culturally safe aged care, particularly for people in rural and remote areas.

Provides cultural information and support for all unpaid carers including phone counselling, free courses, peer support groups, online forums, and support packages.

A national helpline for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are going through a tough time, offering confidential one-on-one yarning with a Lifeline-trained Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Crisis Supporter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Brother to Brother 

Provides phone support for Aboriginal men who need someone to talk to about relationship issues, parenting/caring issues, or any male that are struggling to cope. The service is staffed by Aboriginal men, including Elders, to provide a culturally safe and supportive environment.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service Queensland - Southport

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (Qld) Ltd – (ATSILS), is a community-based legal assistance organisation established in 1972 to advance and protect the legal and human rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

 

ATSILS delivers a broad range of civil, family and criminal law services. In addition, we provide a range of prevention, intervention and community legal education programs, coronial and public sector monitoring and Throughcare services.
